Charles Artemas Kent was born in Hopkinton, New York, Oct. 11, 1835, the son of Artemas and Sarah (Weed) Kent. He received a A.B. from the University of Vermont in 1856 and studied at Andover Theological Seminary, 1857-1859. Kent was admitted to the Michigan Bar in 1960 began practicing law in Detroit. Zacariah F. Wharton was born October 4, 1853 in Ohio. He received his A.B. degree from North Missouri State Normal School (now Truman State University) in 1879, and his LL.B. degree from the University of Michigan in 1884. He then returned to North Missouri State Normal School and earned his M.S. degree in Didactics in 1899.
